My latest project

My latest half baked idea is to make my own spectrum analyser to analyse the spectrum of electromagnetic radiation emitted from a hot object. I want this for some practical activities to support my teaching of the new science specifications. The context is that students should be able to compare the effectiveness of different insulation methods, and we could record the emitted spectrum from insulated tin cans as an alternative to simply measuring the temperature as the hot water inside them cools.

I’ve now found that this isn’t so half baked after all. I’ve found that Revolution Education have already got something that is close to what I want, available as a kit. Click the circuit board photo to go to the site.
